“I will decide the future in the next week”. These are the words of Kenan Sofuoglu on 2022 of his rider Toprak Razgatlioglu, who just today made the official announcement of his stay in Superbike. The Turkish rider, who had been close to landing in MotoGP several times starting from next season, has instead confirmed his presence in the factory-derived world championship with a two-year agreement.
Toprak Razgatlioglu therefore renews the contract with the Pata Yamaha team and will be a standard bearer of the Iwata manufacturer in Superbike until the end of 2023. The spearhead of the manufacturer of the three tuning forks is therefore confirmed as such also in view of the next two seasons, in which he will be called upon to curb Jonathan Rea’s hegemony, a feat he is already attempting this year.
At Donington with only 20 points behind the leader, Razgatlioglu is proving once again that he is the top rider of this championship, showing great solidity on the R1. Razgatlioglu made his debut with Yamaha in early 2020, immediately conquering success and running as one of the most crystalline talents on the current scene.
His skills have not escaped the other Superbike teams who, according to Sofuoglu, have made him offers for the coming seasons. But they did not go unnoticed by MotoGP either, which courted him by offering to switch to prototypes for next season. The farewell of Maverick Vinales and the very probable retirement of Valentino Rossi outlined a particular scenario in Yamaha in the premier class of the world championship and in the Petronas team the rumor that he could replace the Doctor should he leave.
The team managed by Razlan Razali is therefore finding one less candidate to replace Valentino if he decides not to stay in 2022. At this point, Yamaha’s future is shaping up, both in terms of Superbike and in terms of racing. MotoGP, in the latter case because Razgatlioglu made his decision by effectively refusing the offer to join the Petronas team.
Razgatlioglu expresses his enthusiasm in confirming his stay in Superbike with the Pata team: “Yamaha has become my family and I am really happy to renew for another two years. I think we have improved the bike a lot since I arrived in 2020, so it was an easy decision to make. We are fighting for the title this year, we are close to the top and I have the best people around me in the Pata Yamaha team with Brixx helping me achieve my goals. I like the Superbike paddock and I’m happy to be racing here. Maybe MotoGP is something I will think about in the future, but for now I am focused on doing well here in Superbike. I thank everyone who worked to make it happen and now I can’t wait to experience the future with Yamaha ”.
Andrea Dosoli echoes him: “We started the journey with Toprak in 2020, a strange year for everyone, but in which we have established a good relationship. This served as a basis for the current season, which has been very positive so far, the best since Yamaha returned to Superbike. The R1 continues to improve race after race and this allows Toprak to express his great talent. The decision to extend the collaboration between Toprak and Yamaha Motor Europe for the next two seasons came sooner than we expected, we are convinced that there is still a lot to come and together we will face the challenge for the Superbike title. I very much appreciate the trust Toprak has placed in Yamaha, for this I thank him and I can guarantee that we will do our best to meet his high expectations ”.
