A manuscript with notes by the physicist Albert Einstein, among others, was sold at an auction in Paris on Tuesday for 11.6 million euros. Auction house Christie’s had previously estimated the value of the document at 2 to 3 million euros. The manuscript contains notes from the theory of relativity that Einstein would later publish, international news agencies report.
Written between 1913 and 1914, the manuscript is one of only two surviving documents known to Einstein with notes of his famous theory of relativity. About half of the 54-page document is said to have been written by his close friend and fellow Swiss physicist Michele Besso, with whom Einstein worked on the theory.
Einstein kept very few notes in his life and records of him from before 1919 are very rare. Thanks to Besso, the manuscript has been preserved all along. The manuscript also has notes scratched out, showing that even the world-famous scientist made mistakes from time to time.
