Gerard Piqué’s role in the Spanish team has been as fundamental as it is controversial throughout his entire sporting career. His performance on the pitch was always crucial, but his statements about the situation in Catalonia cost him a lot of criticism and whistles in all the fields in Spain. He has now spoken about this in an interview with TV3 in which he assures that he received pressure from Sergio Ramos and Julen Lopeteguicaptain and coach at the time of the illegal independence referendum in Catalonia.
The former defender had always been in favor of holding the vote in his statements and when the altercations occurred he became even more the focus of the national team calls. This is how the episode experienced in the first concentration with La Roja at that time is told in a video clip that is already circulating on the networks:
“I go with the Spanish team, I arrive in Madrid, to Las Rozas, and, surprisingly, that night the coach and the captain, who was Sergio Ramos, pick me up. They tell me: ‘Gerard, you must apologize. You have positioned yourself very much in favor of Catalonia…’, he describes before recounting his response.
“I said: ‘Man, I think I have positioned myself for the right to vote and be able to decide. I am not going to make statements or apologize‘. And well, Julen had prepared a paper for me with what he had to say and told me that I should give a press conference,” he remembers.
“I got to the room, threw the paper in the trash can and told them: ‘Look, if you want me to give a press conference I will do it, but in my own way and I will say what I believe. I’m not going to apologize, I’ll let you know.. Damn, from then on every time I went to the national team it was a mess, whistles…”, the controversial ex-footballer and businessman says in his story.
