Israel, widely believed to be the only country with a nuclear arsenal in the Middle East, says it will not be bound by any agreement and may eventually take unilateral action against Iran’s nuclear sites.
Raisi said in a televised speech during a military parade on the occasion of Army Day: “Israel should know. In the event of any action taken against our people, our armed forces will target the heart of the Zionist entity.”
Soldiers marched in front of the podium where Raisi stood with army officers, helicopters hovered overhead and paratroopers jumped over the parade area near Khomeini’s mausoleum.
The United States and Iran have held indirect talks for more than a year for the nuclear deal, and Washington withdrew from the accord in 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Tehran.
But the talks were suspended last month over an unresolved issue, including whether the United States would remove Iran’s Revolutionary Guards from the US list of foreign terrorist organizations in response to Tehran’s request.
Iran responded by breaching restrictions on its nuclear program in the deal. Under the deal, Iran had limited its nuclear activities in exchange for relief from economic sanctions.
Tehran accused Israel of launching several attacks on facilities related to its nuclear program and killing Iranian nuclear scientists. Israel did not deny or confirm these allegations.
Israel, which Iran refuses to recognize, says it will not accept Iran becoming a “nuclear state”.
“Our strategy is defense, not attack,” Raisi said, adding that “the army made good use of the sanctions opportunity to improve its capabilities, and today our military industry is in the best condition.”
