“What a battle! I was thinking of solving it in the third set and I found myself in the fifth… But I fought and that’s why I’m very happy,” said Berrettini.
He is the first Italian to reach the semifinals at the Australian Open. “It’s incredible, but I hope that tomorrow (Wednesday) there will be two of us,” he said, referring to his compatriot Jannik Sinner (10th), who will face Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (4th) in the quarterfinals.
Berrettini and Nadal already met in 2019 in the semifinals of a Grand Slam, in the United States. Then the Italian also won in the quarters in five sets against Monfils and then fell in three sets against Nadal.
“He also played five sets this Tuesday to qualify (against Canadian Denis Shapovalov). He is older than me, but he has more experience, and more titles too!” he smiled.
