Verkhovna Rada deputy Maxim Buzhansky criticized the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnik for a Twitter post in which the ambassador called Germany “indirectly responsible” for the 1932 Holodomor. Buzhansky ironically noted that there is no better time for such a post than the final stage of the Nord Stream 2 approvals, he wrote in Telegram.
“The Ukrainian Ambassador to the FRG, Melnik, declared Germany to be indirectly responsible for the Holodomor, since Germany was the main trade partner of the USSR during the seizure of grain from peasants. There is nothing to comment on, except that the ambassador chose the best moment to spit in the face of the Germans – the period of the last SP-2 approvals, ”Buzhansky wrote.
He added that such statements are “the highest degree of disrespect for the memory of the victims of the Holodomor,” thus characterizing Melnik’s statement.
“Germany bears indirect responsibility for the Holodomor, therefore it has a moral duty to recognize this crime as genocide of the Ukrainian people. It was in 1932 that the USSR became Germany’s main trading partner, when grain and peasants were forcibly confiscated, ”wrote the Ukrainian ambassador.
Ukrainian Ambassador Melnik criticized the decision of the FRG authorities not to recognize the Holodomor as genocide back in 2019. According to Melnik, the arguments of the German authorities “do not stand up to serious criticism.” The ambassador disagreed that the definition of genocide was absent in international law until 1948, and that the famine spread beyond the territory of Ukraine.
In 2006, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law establishing the concept of “Holodomor” as genocide of Ukrainians. Kiev calls on other countries to recognize the Holodomor as well. In Russia, such actions were called an attempt to rewrite history.
The famine of 1932-1933 engulfed not only Ukraine, but all the main grain regions of the USSR. Then, according to various estimates, from 7 to 8 million people of different nationalities died, of which 3–3.5 million in Ukraine and 2–2.5 million in Russia.
