Military expenses, in particular the funds for the acquisition of new weapons systems, do not suffer a setback with the government crisis, according to the data released by theMilex Observatory: “Since the dissolution of the Chambers (which took place on 21 July), the Minister of Defense Guerini has submitted to Parliament over twenty rearmament programs for a total multi-year investment for the first confirmed phases that exceeds € 12.5 billion. The overall burden of the subsequent phases of the programs, already prefigured but not yet submitted to a vote, could exceed 22 billion euros over the years of the various projects. These decisions, which commit funds to various future state budgets, are proposed and discussed with an executive that should only guarantee the “handling of current affairs”, pending new elections.
Milex talks about five programs: anti-missile shield, Predator drone armament, Carabinieri helicopters, aerial reconnaissance systems, anti-tank rockets for a total multi-year expenditure of almost a billion were presented to Parliament on July 26 and approved quickly (and unanimously) by the Defense Committees of the Senate and Chamber respectively on 2 and 3 August.
Six other programs (new patrol vessels and minesweepers of the Navy, modernization of helicopters for the Navy, anti-aircraft missiles, modernization of destroyers for the Navy and tanks for the Army) for a total multi-year expenditure of over 6 billion were presented by the Ministry between on 3 and 10 August and scheduled for examination in the Defense Committee of the Chamber starting from 8 September.
Ten additional programs (training helicopters, drone management, amphibious ships for the Navy, radio broadcasts, spy satellites, bazookas, a stratospheric platform system, surveillance drones, capacity building for tactical brigade, new light tanks) for one expense The multi-year total of over 5.5 billion was finally sent to Parliament by Minister Guerini on September 1st, just a few days ago. It is not clear whether the competent parliamentary commissions will arrive at scheduling the (mandatory) opinions on these Government acts in the few remaining days of the 18th Legislature.
