Quirinale, on Draghi al Colle Palazzo Chigi insists. But the parliamentarians will never vote for it
We are witnessing a well-orchestrated press campaign, perhaps even sponsored by Palazzo Chigi, which it insists on Mario Draghi as the new President of the Republic.
I skip here all the institutional problems that this would entail: it seems to be of no interest to anyone.
Perhaps those who are aiming in this direction, however, forget a detail that is not a trivial matter. On the contrary. It is the parliamentarians who vote the President of the Republic and they do it by secret ballot. Even if the parties find an agreement on Draghi, the parliamentarians will never vote for him, because they know very well that by moving Draghi there would be a government crisis, with the real, very real risk of early elections (which at the moment only FdI wants). A hypothesis of this kind – voted but not elected – would end up weakening the image of Draghi.
MPs are only interested in one thing: getting to natural end from the legislature and they can be sure that if Draghi remains in government this will happen.
No government crisis, perhaps some small internal changes, but the certainty that there will be no early elections.
Philosophically one can prefer convictions to certainties, but politically it is understandable that a parliamentarian aims above all for his own survival, all the more so since in many cases he is now a privileged one and if he were to “go home” he would risk staying there without a job.
