The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, said in an interview with CNN this Friday (3) that the folder will not recommend the use of Coronavac for the third dose until there is a definitive registration granted by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa).
“It is necessary to have the approval of immunizing agents for application in these specific groups, we cannot place any immunizing agent. There is only one of them with approval [definitiva] from Anvisa [incluindo os adolescentes]. And, if it doesn’t have Anvisa’s approval, we won’t apply through the PNI”, he said.

“I’ll make it very clear: Anvisa’s approval. We are going to move forward with the dose of reinforcement in these groups and, if the research points to the need for this reinforcement in the rest of the Brazilian population, we will do this until the end of the year”, he added, in an interview with CNN.
Vaccines from Pfizer and AstraZeneca are the only ones that have the definitive registration by Anvisa. In the case of Pfizer, only Pfizer has final authorization for use in teenagers. Coronavac and Janssen vaccines are authorized for emergency use.
Marcelo Queiroga stated that the restriction to Coronavac for the third dose would be a general restriction to all without definitive registration. “Not only Coronavac, but any of the vaccines that do not have ANVISA registration will not be used for reasons of population safety,” he said.
A technical note from the Ministry of Health, however, cites the Janssen vaccine as a possibility for applying the additional dose, without considering the absence of this certification. Pfizer’s vaccine, being of a different technology from the others, is cited to be used “preferably”.
