LONDON (Reuters) – Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday at the age of 96, Buckingham Palace said, and will be succeeded to the British throne by her eldest son Charles.
Elizabeth, who took over as queen in February 1952 when she was 25, was the longest-living monarch in the UK and the oldest in the world.
She died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, alongside family members who rushed there after doctors said the monarch’s health was worrying, putting her under medical supervision.
The Queen had been suffering since late last year from what Buckingham Palace called “episodic mobility problems”. She has also been reducing her public appearances and, in some cases, has been represented at events by Charles and his eldest son Prince William, who is now first in line to the British throne.
