The time has come: the 2022 season starts this weekend in Losail, the Qatar Grand Prix will start the title hunt, specifically Fabio Quartararo. Despite the difficulties of the preseason, in which he did not find the speed he was looking for, the reigning world champion remains the man to beat and the reference for those who want to take the scepter from him this season.
The declarations during the winter were very harsh and left room for a future open to various possibilities, however 2022 is the season in which Fabio Quartararo defends the title with Yamaha colors and he can’t wait to get on track: “Honestly, it’s great to be back! When the season ends, the weeks go by quickly. But when you get to the first day of the new season, you realize that the last week before it is very long and it’s great to be here. The pre-season went pretty well, we might have expected something more in terms of top speed, but this is the situation and I feel ready. We know that we will have to give 100% in any case and I can’t wait to start tomorrow ”.
El Diablo he is aware of the fact that it will not be easy to confirm himself, given the competitiveness and the great balance seen in the winter tests. The proximity of all the riders in Sepang and Mandalika makes it difficult to find rivals, but the reigning world champion faces the new season with serenity: “I don’t feel any pressure, but obviously it’s a good feeling. If you are here it means that you are doing something good. We have to distinguish last year from this. 2021 was fantastic and we won the world championship, but now we are all starting from scratch and what matters is to be the fastest and most consistent throughout the season ”.
“It is very difficult to say who my rivals will be in 2022,” he continues. “Last year there could have been five or six riders, but now I could say anyone. The Ducati riders, of course, but there are not a few opponents. In the tests we were all close, we will have to wait for the season to progress a bit before we have a clear indication of who the rivals will be ”.
Rivals that are increasingly at the forefront in terms of aerodynamics and technology. In “pole position” in this sense there is Ducati, the first to bring the holeshot to the track. In a MotoGP where this aspect is becoming more and more dominant, there are those like Fabio Quartararo who believe we are going a little too far: “For me it is starting to be too much. In 2019, the procedure was to press neutral and go. Now you have to check too many things. Yes, you earn something, but it starts to get too complicated ”.
