Max takes pole position with an unexpected driver in P2
Max Verstappen has just taken pole position in qualifying for the 2021 Austrian GP. Lando Norris unexpectedly took second place with an excellent lap. Sergio Pérez will start from P3 tomorrow, with Hamilton in P4.
Q1 and Q2
In the first session of qualifying, Esteban Ocon is the biggest surprise. He is eliminated in 17th place, while his teammate Alonso sets the third fastest time in Q1. Max Verstappen sets the fastest time of everyone in Q1.
The medium tires are popular again in Q2. The drivers are trying to get into the top ten on this tire so that they can start the race on this tire tomorrow. The Mercedes and Red Bull drivers manage to get through easily on the mediums. And even George Russell manages to make Q3 for the first time in a Williams on the medium tires.
In the final session, the drivers will compete for pole position again. At the first fast laps in Q3, Verstappen is fastest. Behind them, Norris is more than tenths behind in second place. Hamilton is then third and Bottas fourth.
Norris manages to improve his time greatly in the second attempts. He manages to get within five hundredths of Verstappen. However, the time of is good enough to take pole position. He will therefore start next to Norris’ McLaren tomorrow. Pérez starts tomorrow in P3 and he has Hamilton next to him
