The Azzurri are forced into the play-offs to qualify for the World Cup which will be played in the winter of next year
Due to the second place behind Switzerland in its qualifying round, Roberto Mancini’s Italy will face a complicated playoff to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.
How does it work
Twelve teams will face each other in three groups of four teams made up of two seeded and two unseeded. Two dry games: the first between a seeded (Italy) and one not, the second between the two winners. Whoever wins both matches qualifies.
Dates
It will be played in March: the first round on 24 and 25, the playoff finals on 28 and 29. The draw will take place on November 26th.
The opponents
The other seeds are Portugal, Sweden, Scotland, Russia, one between Poland and Wales. In the first round there will be one of these national teams: Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, Macedonia, one between Turkey and Norway and – in fact – one between Turkey and Wales. The last round of the qualifying rounds scheduled for this evening will determine the two sixths.
The World Cup
It will be played in Qatar, for the first time in winter, from Monday 21 November to Sunday 18 December 2022.
