During his visit to the USA, the Ukrainian president presents his “victory plan”: with Western help, an end to the war in Ukraine is in sight.
Kyiv – During his visit to the USA, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky repeatedly asked for more Western support in Ukraine WarHe called on his allies to strengthen the Ukrainian armed forces because the war is “closer to the end” than many believe.
“Near the end”: Selenskyj calls for more support against Putin’s troops
“The plan for victory is to strengthen Ukraine,” Selenskyj said in an interview with the US television channel ABC News. “That is why we ask our friends, our allies, to strengthen us. This is very important.” The Ukrainian president believes that they are closer to peace than they thought. He continued: “We are closer to the end of the war. We just have to be very strong, very strong.”
During his visit to the US, the Ukrainian president planned to present his long-awaited “victory plan” for the first time. Against the backdrop of the successful Kursk offensive, he wants to use the new momentum, especially since some Western states have reportedly already pushed for peace negotiations. The plan aims to achieve complete peace under the best possible conditions for Ukraine. Now is the right time: Putin “is very afraid,” Zelensky told the broadcaster. “Why? Because his people have seen that he cannot defend their entire territory.”
“Victory plan”: Selenskyj believes in a timely end to the Ukraine war
“Decisive action now can accelerate a fair end to Russian aggression against Ukraine next year,” Zelensky wrote on Platform X after a meeting with a bipartisan delegation from the US Congress. “Now, at the end of the year, we have a real chance to strengthen cooperation between the Ukraine and the United States.” He was grateful to the US Congress for its unwavering commitment. “Our victory plan will help Russia to practically force peace.”
Zelensky has repeatedly called on the United States and Britain to lift their restrictions on long-range missiles provided to Ukraine. Ukrainian forces want permission to attack deeper targets inside Russia. At the same time, the Russian president warned Vladimir Putinthat the use of Western weapons against Russian targets would be a significant escalation of the conflict and a direct challenge to NATO-States.
Ukraine war coming to an end? Many experts call for more Western help – others hope for negotiations
However, most people consider a timely end to the Ukraine war to be unrealistic. Nevertheless, former NATO advisor John Lough told Newsweekthat Ukraine needs more support: “The The West is still more concerned about the short-term risks of escalation than the long-term consequences a war defeat for Ukraine.” Expert Timothy Ash stressed to the US news magazine that it was important to deter Putin: “We should simply go full throttle and supply Ukraine with all the conventional equipment it needs for self-defence.” Russia would quickly lose a conventional war against NATO – which is why Putin’s “red lines on NATO arms deliveries to Ukraine are actually very weak.”
Other experts assess the situation differently than Selenskyj. Despite Ukraine’s military successes, such as the Kursk offensive, the balance of power has hardly changed, according to Modern War InstituteBoth sides lack resources. A negotiated solution is considered morally difficult, but may be necessary to end the conflict and prevent further damage. (hk)
