The head of the European Council Charles Michel discussed the situation around the arrest of Alexei Navalny with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Reported by TASS with reference to the statement of the EU Council.
“Chairman Michel raised the issue of the detention of Alexei Navalny. The President of the European Council informed President Putin about the serious concern of the EU and its member states over the latest events and called for full and unconditional respect for the rights of Alexei Navalny, ”the message says.
According to Michel, EU leaders will discuss further relations with Moscow at a summit in March. The parties also discussed international cooperation in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
“During the telephone conversation, they also spoke about the COVID-19 pandemic and the importance of global solidarity and international cooperation in the fight against it,” the European Council said in a statement.
The European Parliament adopted a resolution urging to immediately block the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and introduce new sanctions against Russia due to the arrest of Navalny. The deputies demanded the release of the oppositionist, as well as tougher anti-Russian sanctions.
The detention of Navalny at Sheremetyevo airport became known on Sunday, January 17. This happened on the basis of the decision of the head of the Federal Penitentiary Service in Moscow, according to which the oppositionist was put on the wanted list for systematic violations of the conditions of the probationary period. On January 18, he was arrested for 30 days.
Before his arrest, he was in Berlin, where he was taken on August 22, 2020. Two days earlier, during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow, Navalny felt unwell, the plane was urgently landed in Omsk.
