MOSCOW (dpa-AFX) – In the corona pandemic, Russian President Vladimir Putin called on the other Brics economies of Brazil, India, China and South Africa to make more efforts for a joint vaccination research center. It is important to now accelerate the establishment of the already planned center, Putin said at the start of a video summit in Moscow on Tuesday. In addition, they are ready to work with other countries in the production of Russian corona vaccines.
Russia has already approved two vaccines against the coronavirus for use by the general public – against international concerns. Putin, however, again described the vaccines as “effective and harmless”.
It was the first Brics summit at which the heads of state and government came together via video. Putin hosted the virtual meeting. China’s head of state and party leader Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the presidents of Brazil and South Africa, Jair Bolsonaro and Cyril Ramaphosa were also present. The Brics states represent more than a third of the world’s population and almost a quarter of global economic output. The abbreviation Brics is made up of the first letters of the countries.
The conference should also look at the future development of the group and international issues, as well as an economic partnership strategy up to 2025 and an anti-terror strategy./haw/thc/DP/jha
