After three days of debate to define a new roadmap and reconfigure the party organization, Junts This Sunday he completed his national congress in Calella (Maresme) in the most predictable way: Carles Puigdemont has regained the presidency of the party who, de facto, had never stopped piloting.
the uThe only candidacy, made up of 29 people closely trusted by the leader in exile, has been endorsed with 90.18% of the votes in favor. Participation, however, has been rather low: so only 43.86% of the militancy has spoken out. It is evident that the “closed and blocked” list to “avoid punishment votes” has disincentivized the bases.
Next to Puigdemont in the command post, Jordi Turull renews his position as general secretarywhich he has held since 2022. In the vice presidencies, Míriam Nogueras, Josep Rius, Antoni Castellà and Mònica Sales.
7 years since the unilateral declaration of independence
In it seventh anniversary of the unilateral declaration of independence (DUI), Puigdemont has encouraged the party and its militants to “stop resisting” and “go on the offensive for Catalonia”. In October 2017, he said, an “uncertain path” and yet “unavoidable” began to achieve “the well-being and prosperity of the nation.”
Puigdemont wants a “better country” and a “democratically healthy society that the Spanish State has shown that it cannot guarantee.” And to achieve this, it must be “responsible” and assume that a new political stage has opened marked by “divided independence”, by a socialist party exercising a “suffocating monopoly on the institutions” and with the president of the Generalitat “most hostile and Spanishist in history.” According to the leader of Junts, the socialist party did not respect a “law as sacred” as democracy and has taken “profit” from the repression.
In this sense, Puigdemont added: “It is up to us that the country stands up to repression and the exiles can return home permanently. It is up to us to finish the work we started in October 2017, it is up to us
May the best Catalonia return.”
“In Congress we are not married to anyone, only to Catalonia”
With the same tone, Turull has defended the “validity” of the DUI and has vindicated the commitment of its formation to make effective the mandate of the Catalan people. “It is up to us to finish the work we started in 2017. We will not cower in front of Madrid, in Congress We are not married to anyone, only to Catalonia“, he declared.
Nation, progress, freedom and independence
The objective of this congress, according to Puigdemont, has been to forge a “tool” to be as “effective” as possible for Catalonia. “The party had to prepare at an organizational level to come out with an ambitious proposal,” he stated. “Nation, progress, freedom and independence“were not only the motto of the meeting, but also the four pillars that Junts aspires to consolidateaxes that will only reach their maximum potential if they advance together.
Along these lines, Turull has stated that Junts wants to “do politics so that things go well”, not to “look good”. Both leaders have concluded their speeches at the Llobet de Callela Factory amidst loud applause from the public and shouts of “independence.”
The presentations were approved almost unanimously.
In addition to renewing leadership, the national congress has served to outline strategic lines and consolidate the internal cohesion of the party in a new political stage in Catalonia. This noon, the Junts delegates have almost unanimously approved the three presentations presentedwho arrived on the last day no live amendments.
He document on strategy and political action, entitled Hope and alternativehas been supported with a resounding 99% of the votes. The presentation that details the challenges, opportunities and proposals to build the “country they want” has had the same acceptance. Finally, the third document, focused on the organization and internal functioning of the party, has received the green light with 93% support, somewhat lower, but equally solid.
Various prominent personalities attended the final day of the congress, including the president of the ERC parliamentary group, Josep Maria Jové; the president of the PNB, Andoni Ortúzar; Jon Inarritu, from Bildu; and Rubén Cela, representing the BNG. There has also been the presence of leaders of pro-independence entities and union representativesas well as historical figures from Junts, such as former president Artur Mas and former deputy Quim Fornwho has been received with a warm ovation from the public.
