Cartagena Puerto de Culturas achieved the best data in its history in 2023. The organization that manages the municipality's tourist services registered 544,444 visitors last year in all its museum centers, 95,864 more people than in 2022, and 16,157 than in 2019, its best year to date. This was announced this Tuesday by the mayor, Noelia Arroyo, in a statement, where she highlighted the need to “continue working” to “attract more tourists to Cartagena.”
The center that received the most visits was the Roman Theater Museum with 228,594, which represented 42% of the total. It was followed by the panoramic elevator with 122,944 and the Castillo de la Concepción Interpretation Center with another 100,185. They were joined by the 72,955 on the catamaran and the 64,088 people who toured the Roman Forum Molinete Museum.
In the year in question, 27,532 users passed through the Civil War Shelters; by the House of Fortune, 24,132; for the Augusteum, 23,644; by the Punic Wall, 23,401; and for the Christmas Fort, another 14,922. The tourist bus was used by 22,815 passengers. In percentages, Cartagena's centers and museums received 18% more visits than in 2022 and 4% more than in 2019, the previous record year for Cartagena tourism.
If instead of visitors, we talk about visits – the same person visits different centers – the figure is even higher. In this case, the Cartagena museum network received 725,203 visits in total. «Tourists respond because we have managed to create a very attractive heritage destination. And it will continue to grow, because we continue recovering monuments to incorporate them into the Puerto de Culturas network,” Arroyo explained. And he insisted that “progressing in the recovery of the portico of the Roman Theater, in the birthplace of Isaac Peral and highlighting our Amphitheater, which continues to provide great finds in the excavations, will help us increase our offer when, in summer, they can be visited.”
Events office
On the other hand, the Events Office started working this Tuesday. It was following the first meeting with the businessmen and promoters of the sector, together with the municipal technicians in charge of managing the celebration of these cultural events.
The implementation responds to the need to coordinate the cultural, sporting and festive events of special importance that are held in the municipality and avoid overlaps. The mayor assured that the quantity and quality of the events, and the increasingly larger dimension of the calendar “made a higher level of coordination essential to better manage public space, to prevent Cartagena from being counter-programmed, and to better deliver the offer cultural, as well as increasing the acquisition of cultural sponsorships.
