The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has assured that the derailment of the Atocha train this past weekend was caused by a worker to avoid “any risk” for other trains.
“The truth is that the decision of that worker avoids any risk to people or for other trains that may be in the area of Atocha,” explained the head of the branch in statements to the media at the International Bus and Coach Fair that was held this Tuesday in Madrid.
In this way, given the information published by the digital newspaper ‘VozPópuli’, in which it is stated that the train derailed to prevent it from “crashing into a passenger train”, the head of Transport has requested wait for the results of the Railway Accident Investigation Commissionwhich does not know when it will end, since “it is not an organism that depends on it.”
The train was “in a kind of free fall”
Likewise, Puente has asked for “prudence” while waiting for the conclusions of said independent commission. «We cannot reveal aspects of the investigation until it has concluded; So, when the commission concludes and issues its conclusions, we will make the appropriate assessments,” the minister stressed, and then stressed that “they are working and have information that, logically, they have to make available to that commission, but they cannot make it public.
Along these lines, the minister has narrated the situation that occurred with the derailed train, recognizing that it “began a journey in a kind of free fall through the Chamartín tunnel.”
“A worker at the Adif control center makes the decision to divert it to one of the tracks to cause it to derail or prevent it from ending up on the beach of tracks that enters Atocha and could eventually collide with an oncoming train,” he argued. Puente, to then indicate that “it is not determined that there was any train at that time with which it could potentially collide, but it is evident that if the train had continued on its trajectory, it could have reached the track yard and impacted against any train that could come at that moment. “This is what I can tell you, I ask you to understand it,” the minister concluded.
