Public accounts, hole of 80 billion uncovered Unfair concessions to companies
The government accounts for the financial maneuver have revealed a resounding hole in balance for the state coffers, due to strong subsidies for some companies in the midst of the pandemic. The figure – reads the Corriere della Sera – is more than remarkable: 80 billion in lost revenue. A boulder on public accounts. Hidden in the budget law passed by the last government. This is the effect of a rule that provided for an important tax discount for companies wishing to revalue their intangible assets. On paper, a move to strengthen companies’ assets in a difficult time, which has instead turned into a gift. And what’s more, it turned out to be unfair. It was only those companies that did not miss the opportunity that made use of it. So much so that among the hypotheses circulating these days there is also that of completely canceling the measure.
Decision taken – continues the Corriere – In those dramatic days that preceded Italy’s return to the red zone. Covid was not only not defeated but was pushing the country towards new closures. On 20 December an amendment was presented by the Lega which received the favorable opinion of the then yellow-red majority of the Conte government. In that amendment it was written that companies that wanted to revalue their assets, including intangible ones, would have paid a one-off tax of 3%. A substantial discount. Just to get an idea, the corporate income tax is 24%. And if we want to make another comparison, the global minum tax that we are about to impose on the large global corporations is 15%.
