With first lady Michelle Bolsonaro transformed into one of the main stars of President Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) campaign, allies of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) decided not to make her a target of attacks. There is concern about the risk of victimizing Michelle or of Lula being accused of machismo. Instead, the PT’s strategy is to focus on criticizing the president and the episodes of machismo he has played out.
Allies of the former president recognize that the first lady is the “person with the most skill” to try to regain Bolsonaro’s credibility with the female electorate. According to the Datafolha poll released the day before yesterday, Bolsonaro loses to Lula from 29% to 48% in women’s voting intentions.
PT members assess, however, that the impact of Michelle’s presence in Bolsonaro’s campaign is limited. The assessment is that the first lady would not be the best role model for the female electorate, more interested in having empowered women as representatives. Deputy Benedita da Silva (PT-RJ) believes that Lula’s wife, Rosângela da Silva, Janja, has a more spontaneous connection with the electoral campaign. “She was already a militant,” she said. “Michelle submits to her husband’s ideas.”
Opponents recall that Bolsonaro made statements considered sexist in relation to the first lady after the PL convention, in Rio, at the end of July. The president said that Michelle asked for “$5,000 every day” and that she learned sign language to not “talk loudly” at home.
EVANGELICALS
In addition to the female vote, Michelle has played an important role for Bolsonaro’s campaign on another front, the evangelical electorate. as showed the Estadãothe first lady is runner-up for engagement in this segment on social networks, and has intensified her participation in events, in which she takes the opportunity to criticize Lula.
To reach this segment, one of the strategies of the PT campaign is to speak directly with the faithful instead of focusing on the great pastors, who support the current president. “People don’t know that my government created the Religious Freedom Law,” Lula said in a speech on the 27th.
