Party re-elected names in Juiz de Fora and Contagem, in MG; The result is much lower than that of Bolsonaro’s PL, which elected 10 names in this 1st round of voting
THE PTfrom the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvamanaged to elect the command of only two city halls on Sunday (6.Oct.2024), the 1st round of elections, in the 103 largest cities in Brazil, those with more than 200 thousand voters. Another 13 candidates from the party will go to the 2nd round, on October 27, in this group.
The party repeats the low result of 2016, when it elected only 1 candidate in the group of capitals and largest municipalities. In 2020, it managed to register 4 names: José de Filippi Jr., in Diadema (SP), Marcelo Oliveira, in Mauá (SP), Margarida Salomão, in Juiz de Fora (MG) and Marília, in Contagem (MG). No capital was won at that time – which has now repeated in 2024.
In these elections, the PT re-elected Margarida Solomonin Juiz de Fora (MG), and Maríliain Contagem (MG).
Will compete in the 2nd round in 4 capitals: Cuiabá (MT), Fortaleza (CE), Natal (RN) and Porto Alegre (RS). In addition to 9 cities with more than 200 thousand inhabitants: Anápolis (GO, Camaçari (BA), Caucaia (CE), Diadema (SP), Mauá (SP), Olinda (PE), Pelotas (RS), Santa Maria (RS) and Sumaré (SP).
If it manages to win all its candidates in the 2nd round, it will have 15 large city halls in 2025. The balance is still far from the golden years, from 2000 to 2012 – when the party reached its peak and managed to elect candidates in 28 large city halls. In 2016, he felt the effects of Operation Lava Jato, which investigated and arrested PT names for corruption, and only managed to get a mayorship in G103.
The progress in these elections can also be considered low, since Lula, who holds the highest position in the Republic, could have used his influence to increase the result in city halls. But the PT member didn’t work much to elect his party colleagues. He claimed to be tired and worried about his safety. First lady Janja also had a participation considered below expectations.
Meanwhile, even though it was displaced by Lula in 2023, the former president’s PL Jair Bolsonaroperformed better than the PT in these elections. It won 10 mayors in large cities and will have 23 candidates in the 2nd round.
This scenario is important, because it consolidates the political game for the presidential race in 2026.
The scenario in G103, a group of 103 largest cities in Brazil, is important because they are where 38.8% of the country’s voters are concentrated. It is in these locations where it is possible to have a 2nd round, when no candidate obtains at least 50% plus 1 of the votes in the initial round on October 6th. Read the full list of 103 cities.
