Refugees experience traumatic experiences not only in their country of origin, but also on their flight. Germany’s psychotherapists demand that this must be prevented with safe access routes.
Berlin – According to Germany’s psychotherapists, the new federal government must open legal access routes for refugees.
“People on the run not only experience life-threatening events in their country of origin and on the escape route that cause severe psychological injuries, but the experiences at European borders also traumatize many people,” said the President of the Federal Chamber of Psychotherapists, Dietrich Munz, of the German Press Agency .
“Anyone who closes the borders must create doors through which access is permitted,” he demanded of the potential coalitionaries SPD, Greens and FDP. A possibility to apply for asylum in Germany is necessary, “and we need contingents that determine politically how many people we take in”.
New government needs to readjust access to treatment
Munz also said that the upcoming government must urgently take action when it comes to access to treatment. So far, refugees have generally had no legal right to psychotherapy for the first 18 months. Mentally ill refugees would have to be cared for.
On November 6, a refugee who had come from Syria injured four men with a knife in an ICE. He was admitted to a mental hospital. After evaluating the perpetrator’s data carriers, an Islamist motive for the attack, which came completely suddenly for those affected, cannot be ruled out. Due to previous acts of violence by refugees, in which symptoms of a mental illness and indications of radicalization were found, extremism experts are currently increasingly concerned with this phenomenon.
“The experiences on the flight often lead to severe mental illness,” said Munz. This could also include psychotic illnesses in which those affected are persecuted by delusions – “Such illnesses could be recognized and treated in good time if refugees were offered psychotherapeutic help in principle”. dpa
