“We will have a hard time giving up masks: that’s why”
We are preparing to take off the masks outdoors, but not everyone will be a real goodbye. Massimo di Giannantonio and Enrico Zanalda, co-presidents of the Italian Society of Psychiatry (SIP)they explain: “We are certainly eager for freedom and it is certainly easier to adapt to the loosening measures, but many will continue to be afraid and still wear the mask outdoors. Especially those suffering from anxiety will not take it off, transforming it in a reassuring and protective ‘Linus blanket’ that marks the border between us and the rest of the world “
“Kisses and hugs? The rule changes have made us insecure”
“And if it will not be easy for everyone to stop using the mask outdoors, it will be even more complex to return to approaching others, to hug each other, and to have physical contact. We will be very wary of getting closer to strangers, and we will hardly shake hands when you don’t know each other. Kisses and hugs will return, but they will be selective: if in the past when the prohibitions fell we did not perceive limits, extending these gestures of affection even beyond our close contacts, now this cautious attitude towards strangers could accompany many people over time, as an imprinting – underline the experts – Also because the constant change of rules creates insecurity because it makes people more unstable from the point of view of mood and emotion and therefore increases anxiety. Having said that, making the rules less stringent, if the pandemic is really loosening its grip, remains a correct decision in keeping with the times “.
