PSV mercenary Timo Baumgartl (26) hopes to be back on the football field in August. The German defender received the sad news in May of this year that a tumor had been discovered in him. Nevertheless, Baumgartl was again loaned to Union Berlin this season, where he hopes to make his comeback next month.
Immediately after the tumor was discovered – Baumgartl had a form of testicular cancer – he was operated on, after which the German had to rehabilitate. Chemotherapy followed, which made recovery more difficult. On Monday it became clear that the German is not going to a training camp with his team, but this does not mean that his rehabilitation is not going well.
“Actually, we are waiting for the final approval from the doctors. They will talk about that at the end of July,” said Union Berlin trainer Oliver Ruhnert in conversation with Die Stimme Berlins. ,,We are optimistic that he can continue his rehabilitation with us at the beginning of August.
Individual training
Due to the operation, the PSV mercenary could not even walk for some time. “Now he can do it again. Privately, he is making enormous progress, he informed us two days ago,” says Ruhnert. Baumgartl was present two days ago at Union’s practice match against Bohemians Dublin (2-1). “He is already training individually in various areas. ”
Baumgartl himself is in talks with the German SWR talked about his illness. “To be diagnosed with cancer at 26 has confronted me for the first time in my life with my own mortality,” he said, among other things. In my case, that is also due to the fact that the tumor was found early.”
The club also grants Baumgartl a holiday. At the beginning of August, the 26-year-old defender will go away with his girlfriend. ,,That will do him good. He has to take the time to come back.”
