PSV has beaten Ajax in the battle for the Johan Cruijff Scale. In Amsterdam, in an as usual swirling Johan Cruijff Arena with tens of thousands of supporters, it was 0-4 for the Eindhoven players. It was also the last game of top referee Björn Kuipers, who announced his retirement this week.
The match started very early. In the second minute, PSV player Noni Madueke pulled in from the right wing, knocked out two men and shot into the short corner: 0-1. Ajax pushed back, but was unable to score. A few minutes after Madueke’s goal, PSV keeper Remko Pasveer cleverly saved a header from Steven Berghuis from close range. A goal by Ajax player Sébastien Haller on a pass from Dusan Tadic was rejected after intervention by the VAR due to offside.
In the 28th minute it was again Madueke who found the net after a play on the right wing. This time the Englishman passed an Ajax defender to the right and shot in from about ten meters high. Ajax’s fate was already sealed in the 39th minute when referee Björn Kuipers gave Ajax player Nico Tagliafico a red card after a major tackle.
In the second half it was still 0-3 by a goal from Yorbe Vertessen (on a pass from Cody Gakpo). And in the 89th minute Mario Götze shot the ball into the top right corner: 0-4.
