After the first attempts with Game Boy Advance games, a new PlayStation Portable (PSP) emulator for iPhone is available on the App Store. PPSSPP, an app developed by Henrik Rydgård, is the result of over a decade of development and can be downloaded for free on iPhone and iPad. For those who wish to support the project, a paid version is also available at a cost of 4.99 euros. In a blog post, Rydgård explained that the approved version has some limitations compared to previous builds of the app. The most significant is that Apple does not allow the use of Just-in-Time (JIT) recompilers, which dynamically translate code for the operating system, thus improving performance. This is one of the reasons why we will probably never see a GameCube or Wii emulator on iOS. Fortunately, Rydgård writes, “iOS devices are generally fast enough” to run almost any PSP game.

Beyond that, Rydgård announced that support for the iPad’s Magic Keyboard has been removed as “the old method used an undocumented API,” but promised that the feature will return in the future. The same goes for support for the Vulkan graphics API, which he says will be brought back, possibly with a native Metal backend. PPSSPP works on iOS 12 and later, on iPadOS 12 and later and can also be installed on Vision Pro.
