A job advert posted by Sony gave rise to a particular rumor about a possible change of architecture hardware from the company, which may concern PS6 or the rumored portable console which may be in development.
To tell the truth, the question is rather vague, but it was enough to start the hypothesis among various leakers and online commentators: Sony Interactive Entertainment has published a job announcement for a “system software developer”, which specifically mentions “different architectures”.
The job description reads “to develop a system that allows programs developed on our gaming machines to be executed on machines with different architectures”, we read, which seems to concern compatibility between different systems.
An ARM-based PlayStation?
However, the following is even more specific and seems to point to a machine with a new architecture: “Specifically, we will need to be able to run various games developed for PlayStation on a system with a new architecture.”
This could suggest a device to be launched that could have a different architecture from the current PS5, although the question is still very doubtful. The new architecture could be enough ARMconsidering recent trends.
In fact, Microsoft also seems to have taken into consideration the ARM architecture for a possible new console, based on some internal documents that emerged during the process with the FTC for the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, so the question could be plausible.
The issue is reported by Tae Kim, Barron’s journalist, but it is not clear precisely what the source from which the document is taken is, although seeing it reported on X it seems to be an authentic announcement. Just in the last few hours, another rumor has emerged about a possible portable PlayStation in development.
