According to new tests performed by Hikikomori Media, i PS5 games now continue to work even if the CMOS internal battery either dead or missing. The tests have been done with both physical and digital games, but there is a category of video games that don’t work anyway. In fact, it seems that the only exception to the new “feature” of PS5 are the PlayStation Plus titles. These always require a CMOS battery.
Recall that previous tests had ruled that PS5 was able to run some games without CMOS battery, but many physical and all digital games were not running. There CMOS powers the internal clock of the PlayStation consoles, and when players start a game, the game machine compares the date and time with a server and ensures that the owner has the rights to use the game. If the battery is low or absent, the player must manually enter a date and PS5 verifies this information with PlayStation Network.
However, if the connection with PlayStation Network if it were impossible, it would be impossible to run the games. Since there is a possibility that the Network will be shut down by Sony, sooner or later, the consoles could theoretically become unusable if the battery loses its charge. Now, however, PS5 has been updated and the problem has been overcome. With the sole exception of PS Plus games, PlayStation 5’s physical and digital games appear to work even without CMOS.
The problem had already been solved on PS4 too, with a previous update in September 2021. Always talking about PS5: the black side panels of 5ides are now in pre-order from GameStop.
