According to well-known video game insider and journalist Tom Henderson, a possible PS5 Pro it might not be so obvious, with Sony even might skip mid-gen and launch directly PS6 when the time is right.
After revealing the possible month of release of the “gen 2” model of the PS5 with removable player, Henderson explained that the standard PS5 has not yet been exploited to 100% and that mass production of the console probably will not begin before the end of the year, considering the well-known supply problems of semiconductors and other materials.
From this assumption a mid-gen model might not make sense and indeed Henderson claims he has heard more PS6 rumors than on PS5 Pro, a sign that Sony may not actually be planning an enhanced model of its flagship console.
“As for whether there will be a Pro version of the PS5 this generation, I’m not entirely sure. It doesn’t look like the regular version has been fully utilized yet and probably won’t be available in mass until later this year. All that All I can say is that I’ve heard more about the PS6 than a PS5 Pro,” said Henderson.
The reasoning made by Henderson would not seem wrong, at least on paper, given that between production problems, increased costs and the large number of cross-gen productions also scheduled in 2023, the current generation is still struggling to take off. In a similar scenario, launching a Pro model of PS5, or even Xbox Series X, at a higher price could therefore prove to be counterproductive. In any case, take Henderson’s statements with a grain of salt, awaiting official news from Sony.
