Sony could launch its own removable covers for PS5.
The patent of Sony for customizable covers for PS5 has finally been made public, as noted by OpAttack. This has led to speculation that the console manufacturer might consider making their own interchangeable covers and skins. The patent follows a year of trouble with third-party manufacturers creating their own PS5 covers and then facing legal action from Sony.
The patent describes a “ornamental design for a cover for an electronic device“before viewing several diagrams showing the covers from different perspectives. This potentially suggests that Sony might consider producing their own interchangeable covers.
A video teardown of the console released a month before PS5 became available to gamers shows how easy it is to remove covers and how simple it is to apply custom covers. However, the patent that emerged could also simply be a legal answer to problems Sony has faced with third-party manufacturers.
Third-party manufacturers have been trying to sell custom PS5 cases since the console’s release in November 2020. Platestation.com started selling custom cases a month before the console launched, but Sony moved quickly. The company had to change its name to Customize My Plates to make it clear that it was not affiliated with Sony in any way, but then a further legal threat led to the manufacturer canceling all orders.
After months of silence, the company returned as CMP Shells and claimed to be “untouchable” after filing its own patent. This appears to have worked so far and CMP Shells is currently still selling covers through its website.
Meanwhile, another company known as Dbrand announced their covers in December 2020 and even challenged Sony to sue them. The company eventually launched its products last month after receiving several cease and desist letters from Sony. Dbrand returned a few days later with a redesigned cover very different from Sony’s design.
