Sony sold fewer PS5 consoles in the quarter than it had previously planned
Japanese corporation Sony sold fewer PS5 consoles than it had previously planned. This was reported in its quarterly report companies.
In its report for the first quarter of this fiscal year, which ran from April 1 to June 30, Sony said it sold 2.4 million PlayStation 5s, slowing the pace of console distribution — the corporation shipped 3.3 million units in the same period in 2023.
Since the release of the current console — since November 2020 — the IT giant has sold 61.7 million units of the device. At the same time, overall sales of Sony’s gaming division increased by 32 percent for the quarter. The company revised its operating profit forecast for the entire financial year by 3 percent.
Sony’s share of digital content purchased and downloaded also increased to 80 percent in the quarter. In 2023, that share was 70 percent.
In early July, journalists from The Shortcut revealed the most likely location for the PlayStation 5 Pro release. According to them, the console will be presented at the Tokyo Game Show in September.
