Doing so could increase the availability of consoles as well.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many problems worldwide, including the shortage of components for many electronics companies, in particular of semiconductors, which found themselves having to respond to an exponentially growing demand for production.
In this equation, Sony also fits with PlayStation 5 stock issues currently not yet resolved almost a year after the release of the console. However, many companies are trying to make up for this shortage as much as possible to meet the high demand from consumers, and the Japanese giant itself may be on the move.
The financial newspaper Nikkei has in fact reported that Sony and TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co) are considering investing in construction of a chip factory in Japan, for a total of $ 7.15 billion. The factory is expected to produce semiconductors for automobiles, camera sensors and other products that are still lacking in the market. Production is expected departing in 2024, according to the report.
Both Sony and TSMC have not commented on the news at the time, but the latter had already announced in July that it was planning a serious overhaul of production in Japan. In any case, the hypothesis of the start of the new production in 2024 speaks volumes about the extent of this crisis and the fact that its resolution will not be simple nor will it unfortunately take place quickly.
