Acapulco (Mexico) (AFP) – Dozens of people demonstrated this Tuesday in the Mexican resort of Acapulco in rejection of the murder of journalist Fredid Román, who wrote a political column and published information on his social networks and was shot on Monday afternoon in Chilpancingo, capital of the state of Guerrero. , at South of that country.
Román was shot at on Monday afternoon, bringing the total number of journalists killed so far this year in the Aztec country to more than a dozen.
To the cry of “no to silence!” and with signs that read “enough of impunity” and “justice”, the protesters, mostly communicators and journalists, gathered on the coastal avenue of Acapulco, in Guerrero, to repudiate the murder.
“We demand a professional investigation and that they proceed with the full rigor of the law (…). We demand respect for the right to inform and to be informed,” Ignacio Hernández, a veteran journalist from Guerrero, said during the rally.
The crime was also condemned this Tuesday by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. “It’s a sad case,” he said at his daily news conference.
The protesters read aloud the names of other journalists killed in 2012 in Mexico, considered one of the most dangerous countries for the press.
Román, who had been practicing journalism for three decades, published a column in the Chilpancingo newspaper ‘Vértice’, had a news page on Facebook and was editor, according to local media, of ‘La Realidad’, a small regional publication.
His last post on Facebook, on the same Monday, referred to the government report on the disappearance of 43 students from the Ayotzinapa school in 2014, in Guerrero. This document was released last week and has been widely publicized in the media.
More than 150 journalists murdered since 2000 in Mexico
The State Prosecutor’s Office indicated in a statement that it is investigating whether Roman’s case is related to the murders of the communicator’s son and another man, which occurred on July 1.
According to local media, the deceased son of the journalist was dedicated to selling chicken and had denounced alleged criminals who would control the distribution of food in some towns in Guerrero. Roman had continued with these claims.
Until last Thursday, the Mexican government documented the murder of 12 journalists this year. The NGO Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has indicated that ten of these cases could be related to their work.
According to RSF, since 2000 more than 150 journalists have been murdered in Mexico. These crimes, for the most part, remain unpunished.
