Mark Zuckerberg has just shared a short video demonstration showing some of the capabilities of the next high-end virtual reality headset from A half, Project Cambria. While keeping the device hidden, Meta highlights the next viewer’s ability to perform high-resolution, full-color passthrough so users can interact with virtual objects overlaid on their real-life environments.
The mixed reality experience is built using Meta’s Presence Platform, introduced last fall.
Meta also released a two and a half minute video highlighting Presence Platform, showing the huge difference in experience between Quest and Cambria.
We haven’t received any new details on the hardware itself. However, Protocol’s Janko Roettgers was able to briefly test the unit by running a demo, stating that the video quality produced by Cambria’s sensors is not yet photorealistic but “of good quality“.
The demo, which was shown at the Facebook Connect event last year, is called The World Beyond and Meta says it will soon be available in the App Lab for developers to try it out. Project Cambria is just one of several virtual reality headsets that Meta plans to introduce in the coming years, and using its technology to help developers create augmented reality experiences is just a first step in Meta’s plan for traditional AR devices. . Cambria is expected to launch this year.
