As president, Trump caused record numbers of executions. What might a second term look like? “Project 2025” gives a dark insight.
Washington, DC – In six months in 2020, Donald Trump’s administration carried out more federal civilian executions than any previous president in the 20th or 21st centuries. This was recorded by the “Death Penalty Information Center” after the end of the former US president’s term in office.
Although Trump is the candidate republican has not yet been officially confirmed for the US election, there is already speculation about what a second Trump era in the USA could look like – also with regard to the implementation of the death penalty.
US election 2024: Trump is already making announcements about a possible second term in office
The former US president has already made announcements about a possible second term as part of his election campaign: deploying the military at internal and external borders, monitoring abortions and mass deportations are part of Trump’s plans.
The 77-year-old also spoke out in favor of expanding the number of crimes punishable by death. His 2016 rival, Hillary Clinton, said of Trump: “Take him at his word. He tells us what he plans to do.” A former Trump administration justice official reveals more about Trump’s alleged plans.
Much of the planning for Trump’s second term in office is said to be based on a report by the Washington Post reported to have been unofficially outsourced to a partnership of right-wing think tanks in Washington. The result of this planning is “Project 2025”, which envisages radically restructuring the state. One of the several hundred pages of the plan contains a call for the execution of all remaining federal death row inmates.
Trump’s ex-justice official calls for execution of remaining people on death row
Former Trump Justice Department official Gene Hamilton is also involved in the project by the right-wing think tank “Heriatge Foundation”. The former justice official is the author of a chapter from “Project 2025” in which he demands that the US government carry out the executions “until Congress decides otherwise by law”.
A report from the US newspaper The Independent According to Hamilton, Trump writes that in a second term as US president, he must “do everything possible” to execute the remaining 40 people on federal death row.
Sad execution record: Trump calls for the death penalty to be expanded to include other crimes
Trump should face this Independent-According to a report, they have already shown support for expanding the death penalty during the election campaign. For example, Trump proposed execution as a punishment for drug crimes and human trafficking at the US-Mexico border.
In his last term in office, Trump already had a sad record with federal executions. In 2020, for the first time in the country’s history, more people were executed by the US government than by all states combined. The majority of executions in 2020 were ordered by the US government, led by the former president. Most execution sentences in the USA are generally made at the state level.
Death penalty in the USA: US President Biden is against execution
The Capital punishment was reintroduced in the USA in 1976. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, around 1,600 people have been executed since then. Execution remains a means of punishment in 27 states. The US government also adheres to the death penalty. Overall, statistics show that the number of death sentences carried out in the USA is declining. The incumbent US President Joe Biden is fundamentally against the death penalty.
The former Trump Department official explains why Independent according to the demand for the expansion of the death penalty with “deterrence”. However, research shows that the deterrent effect of the death penalty cannot be proven. Compared to the WDR said Alexander Bojčević, death penalty expert at Amnesty International: “In the US states where the death penalty applies, the murder rate is sometimes significantly higher than in those that have abolished it.”
And the risk of a wrong verdict also leaves room for criticism of Trump’s alleged plan. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, around 200 convicts have been subsequently released since 1973 because their innocence could be proven.
US election 2024: Expected race between Biden and Trump
Trump himself is still on trial in New York and still has a number of trials ahead of him. The Republican presidential nominee will be officially announced at the Republican National Convention in June. However, the probability is already very high that Donald Trump will enter the race for the presidency again. (pav)
