The Separatist Regional Defense Staff of the Donetsk “Republic” said on its Telegram website that it had “completely taken control” of “Krasny Liman” (the old name of the Liman) thanks to military units from the separatist Lugansk region and the “fire support” of the Russian armed forces.
Lyman is an important railway junction northeast of the city of Sloviansk, which Kyiv recaptured from pro-Russian separatists in 2014, and Kramatorsk, the capital of the Ukrainian-controlled part of Donetsk region in the east.
The capture of Lyman clears the way towards Sloviansk and then Kramatorsk, with progress being made in attempting to encircle Severodonetsk and Lysechansk, two important eastern Ukrainian cities.
The separatists confirmed Tuesday that they control half of Lehman.
