There is confusion regarding the awards given to the players of the Colombian U-17 team, which will play the final of the world championship of the category against the Spanish team.
This is mainly due to a regulation of the International Federation of Associated Football (Fifa); which specifies that resources will not be awarded as a prize to the selections of minor categories that have a good performance in their tournaments.
Article 47 of the regulations of the governing body of world football explains that the federations will only receive a commemorative plaque and a certificate of participation.
The same section also mentions that “the teams classified in the first three places in the World Cup will receive medals, which will be gold for the champion team; silver for the runner-up and bronze for the one that finishes in third place”, in addition to the trophy for the team that manages to win the tournament.
Added to this dichotomy are the well-known statements by the president of the Colombian Football Federation (FCF), Ramón Jesurún, who reaffirmed this condition by Fifa before the national media.
“The awards are only given to professional soccer players; They are amateur girls (amateurs) ”, were his words, which generated a strong controversy in public opinion.
However, the Federation published an official statement explaining that it was all a misinterpretation of the words of the president of the Colombian soccer regulatory body; citing the aforementioned Fifa regulations.
In addition, it also clarified in the same circular that, as happened with the U-20 team in the world championship played in Costa Rica, the players of the U-17 team and the FCF do have agreed economic prizes based on their performance in the tournament.
“However, as happened with Colombia’s participation in the Fifa Costa Rica 2022 U-20 Women’s World Cup, in which Fifa, for the reasons stated, did not award money; The Colombian Football Federation (FCF) did give economic recognition to the players and it will do the same with the players who participate in the Fifa India 2022 U-17 Women’s World Cup, “said the Federation.
The national government was also mentioned in this situation, because in the face of confusion, many people asked the state to reward the players. This brought to light the first article of Law 1389 of 2010 and Resolution 1834 of 2017, which specify that prizes will be awarded to senior and youth teams that have outstanding participation in world cups.
