They serve 46.1 million people; data are from Abcon, which represents the private concessionaires
Private sanitation companies are present in 9.1% of Brazilian municipalities, according to the Abcon Sindicom (Association and National Union of Private Concessionaires of Public Water and Sewage Services), released this Wednesday (6.Jul.2022). In 2021, the share was 7%.
By March 2022, 120 cities now had sanitation services provided by private concessionaires, totaling 509 cities. In total, private companies serve 46.1 million people, or 21.7% of the population.
State companies have greater participation in the sector, serving 71.7% of the municipalities and 74% of the population.
Since the legal framework for sanitation came into force, 2 years ago, 16 auctions have been held, with R$ 46.7 billion in contracted investments. They resulted in grants of BRL 29.5 billion – of this amount, 77% were paid to the State of Rio de Janeiro in the auction of blocks 1, 2 and 4, in April 2021.
For 2022 and 2023, it is estimated that 28 tenders will be held for the concession of water and sewage services, with a forecast of R$ 24.45 billion in investments and 16.5 million people served.
“One of the fundamental challenges is regionalization. Making a law establishing regions is the beginning of everything. There is a whole process of inter-federative articulation, consolidation of regional governance, the structure of the granting power, the modeling of contracts and the bidding process that needs to move forward”, declared the president of Abcon, Percy Soares Neto.
Another challenge is the regulatory harmonization of A-N-A (National Water Agency) which, according to Neto, needs to be faster.
