High work pressure in prisons creates unsafe situations. Serious violence against employees is increasing, according to research by the FNV trade union. The union is calling for more staff. In the meantime, severe cutbacks are looming because of a million-dollar deficit for the prisons.
It is not easy for prisons to find new employees, now that just about all sectors are struggling with staff shortages. The PIs in Zwolle and Zutphen are opening their doors to recruit new colleagues.
When the new prison in Zutphen opened 25 years ago, there were 750 applicants for 36 vacancies. “There was a lot of interest in working here,” says prison director Danny Vette. “The job market looks very different now. We are dealing with staff who choose another job or quit because of age.”
Vacancies
In 2022, the Penitentiary Institution Achterhoek has great difficulty finding employees. There are fourteen vacancies, Vette confirms. “That is quite a lot for a small organization.” The Zutphen prison will expand from 210 to 234 places later this year. Additional staff is needed for this.
The situation is no different at the PI Zwolle. Thirty vacancies are available here. When the renovation is completed, this PI will go back from 350 to 400 inmates. “We are looking for people for all kinds of positions,” says director Hans Plattel. “From security to workers.”
