Prison management Denmark is alleviating prison overcrowding by passing hundreds of convicts to Kosovo

Prisoners from outside the EU who have been convicted in Denmark and have been deported may end up in Gjilan Prison, Kosovo.

Kosovo and Denmark have signed a letter of intent under which Kosovo will lease 300 prisoners to Denmark, according to AFP.

Denmark pays EUR 15 million a year in prison rent to Kosovo. Denmark’s motive is to reduce overcrowding in its own prisons. The agreement is due to enter into force in 2023.

Kosovo transit of prisoners from so-called third countries, ie non-EU nationals. These are the criminals who are to be deported by Denmark after the end of their imprisonment.

“This sends a clear message to third-country nationals who have been deported: your future is not in Denmark,” the Minister of Justice Nick Hækkerup said on Monday.

Prisoners is to serve his sentence in Gjilan Prison. Gjilan is located about 50 km from the capital of Kosovo, Pristina.
