The decision was made after she married Kei Komuro, a fellow from the University who does not belong to high society.
Princess Mako of Japan has officially ceased to be part of the country’s imperial family after marrying Kei Komuro on Tuesday, a colleague from the University who does not belong to high society.
The Imperial House of Japan has presented this Tuesday the necessary documentation before a municipal government for the couple to register their marriage, points out the Japanese radio television NHK.
The wedding has not been governed by the traditional imperial ceremony, reserved for family members, because with this union Mako has certified his departure from Japanese high society.
Both will appear before fifty media outlets throughout the day in a Tokyo hotel, although journalists have been asked to send their questions in advance.
Mako, eldest niece of the current Emperor Naruhito and eldest daughter of Crown Prince Fumihito, has finally culminated years of tension over the link with Komuro.
One of the points of conflict was due to the dispute surrounding Komuro’s mother and an old fiancé of hers over money used, in part, for the boy’s education. This affair dominated the Japanese tabloid press to the point that it led to the postponement of the initial wedding date, originally scheduled for 2018.
In April, Komuro issued a statement seeking to correct what he called misunderstandings among the public about his mother’s financial status. Shortly after publishing the statement, Komuro offered to make a payment to her mother’s former fiancé in an effort to resolve the currency dispute.
To this matter are added the inherent conditions of the wedding, since with the link, Mako would have to leave the Imperial Court, as it has finally happened.
Although the princess is entitled to a significant amount of money to pay for her departure – more than one million euros – Mako has renounced this dowry in order not to arouse the animosity of the population, in a decision unprecedented in history postwar Japan.
Furthermore, in early October, the Imperial Household Office issued a statement in which it noted that the princess had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder due to repeated public criticism she has received.
