The two eldest children of William and Kate, the Prince and Princess of Wales, joined the high royals at their great-grandmother’s funeral service in London on Monday afternoon. They did so after they had first ridden in the royal car with both their parents.
During the service at Westminster Abbey, the children behaved solemnly and, despite their young age, they clearly understood the magnitude of the event. After the ceremony, Her Majesty’s coffin set out on a final journey from London to Windsor. As the coffin passed the young royals, Princess Charlotte could be seen telling her older brother, “You must bow now.” William and Kate’s eldest son appeared to accept his sister’s instructions and then lowered his head as the Queen’s coffin passed him.
It is not the first time that Charlotte has shown such alertness to British protocol. On the 70th anniversary of the Queen, the young princess could also see how the young princess made her brothers aware of their behavior on several occasions. But despite all the formal duties, it got just a little too much for Charlotte Monday afternoon. For example, the princess burst into tears after the service at Westminster Abbey and sought comfort from her mother Kate.
