Every self-respecting Spaniard, in addition to a football coach and a President of the Government, has had an audience analyst inside him for a few weeks now. Sergio del Molino explained it very well in his column on Sunday. On the other side of the aspiring elevator talk show host, we are those aspiring to make a living from TV. The people who have not slept a wink many nights waiting for the information to confirm whether that morning we would go to the set to continue working or to collect our belongings. And also the journalists who have been dedicated to studying these figures for many years. Some of us have had to become aware, out of pure necessity, of data that is not so easy to read and, according to what has been written in some newspapers in recent weeks, very easy to handle.
Natalia Marcos published an excellent article last week in which the data from The Revolt since its premiere. When I read it I concluded something that those of us who read these figures have been verifying daily for a long time: the access prime time has phagocytized prime time. We are building a house whose hall is larger than the living room. It’s not that we viewers have become earlier, it’s that television has become later. When the access they started – let’s think about The Informalfor example, occupied the time slot from 9:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., until the series or star program of the night began (10:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. is when most viewers watch TV). Now they are the star program of the night, which lasts until 11:00 p.m. If you later want to watch the next broadcast, you do so knowing that the next day you will arrive at work with bags under your eyes around your ankles.
Having the same format in prime time from Monday to Thursday is something that almost all general channels in Spain do right now. It is very profitable for them, of course. But that the prime time losing steam is not good news for the formats intended for that segment, whose investment will become inexorably cheaper. The only good thing about this is that if we manage to continue delaying its start, maybe when we wake up, instead of having breakfast with the hearings and the fear of losing our jobs, we will start doing it, what do I know, seeing live who wins? Big Brother.
