Primavera Sound escapes indie nostalgia with Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX

Between renewing itself and dying crushed by a tsunami of indie nostalgia, Primavera Sound seems to have chosen a middle path: entrusting itself to the great divas of contemporary pop to crown a poster “of pure musical present”, as the organization celebrates in a statement.

There is no shortage, how to do it, of usual suspects of the indie morass such as LCD Sounsystem, Beach House, Stereolab, Spiritualized, but the place occupied last year by survivors of the nineties such as Pulp and PJ Harvey will be shared in 2025 by Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX and FKA twigs.

The festival, which will hold its main days from June 5 to 7, closed last year’s edition with 268,000 attendees (193,000 on the Forum’s paid days) and claimed to be “the largest festival in Spain and one of the most greats of Europe.

To stay in that league and continue to be the favorite of the traveling and foreign public, the Barcelona festival has devised a poster in which Sabrina Carpenter, Chapell Rohan and Charli XCX – “the three most important artists of the moment,” they say – share the spotlight with electronic delights (Jamie XX, Floating Points), indie legends (there’s Kim Deal), old acquaintances (TV On The Radio, The Jesus Lizard) and more or less exotic detours (Salif Keita returns).

Further? Cat Power will continue pulling Dylan’s thread, Carolina Durante will present ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ in a big way, Alan Sparhawk will explore life after Low, Turnstle will repeat just a year later with their vigorous Mexican hardcore, The Sabers of Paradise will celebrate their thirty years of life, MJ Lenderman and Waxahatchee will show the face and the cross of contemporary indie… And so on until we reach the 147 artists that the festival has confirmed at once.
