Price increase at Dazn
:
Due to the madness about rights, football becomes a luxury good
opinion Dusseldorf The streaming provider Dazn has informed its existing customers that the prices for existing subscriptions will also increase drastically. This is bitter news for football fans, because what was once a popular sport has degenerated into a luxury item.
It wasn’t that long ago that the head of the German Football League made people sit up and take notice. The aim is to make the TV market more attractive again for the Bundesliga, to push it more into the free-to-air area of ââTV programming. The aim is to make the league more attractive again for supporters who cannot and do not want to visit a stadium every week. Because the DFL headquarters had also realized that interest in professional football was dwindling and the quotas were falling.
This could even get worse in the future, because the streaming provider Dazn, which broadcasts three to four Bundesliga games live on a weekend, informed his existing customers on Friday that the prices for existing subscriptions will also increase drastically. The cheapest subscription should then cost 299.88 euros per year (instead of the previous 149.99 euros). The costs for a monthly subscription have also doubled, rising from EUR 14.99 to EUR 29.99. An expensive pleasure.
At this point one can argue that Dazn also broadcasts other leagues and sports – for example the North American football league NFL or various football leagues in Europe. The average user is likely to have taken out the subscription because of the Bundesliga and Champions League rights. And the truth is that the streaming provider has lost important rights in recent years: those for the Europa League, for example, the Premier League or the North American ice hockey league NHL.
The fact that Dazn announced a quality offensive during the week and wants to produce largely from the stadiums in the future – with well-known experts such as Michael Ballack – does not change that. Do viewers even want that? After all, Dazn was successful in the first few years because, unlike Sky, they focused on the core: the game. And what’s more, the streaming quality regularly leaves a lot to be desired.
On Friday, many fans rioted online and announced that they would cancel their current subscription. 300 euros a year for partly unattractive games – that’s too much for most fans. Especially since, as a football fan who wants to see the full TV experience with all leagues and competitions, you also have to pay your monthly fee for Sky, Amazon Prime, RTL+ and MagentaTV. From the new season onwards, that can quickly become 100 euros per month. Woe to anyone who still has a season ticket for their favorite club or just wants to buy a day ticket. Football is currently degenerating into a luxury good.
In times of drastic inflation, it is clear that prices are rising everywhere. But then people part with luxury goods first. The fact that football is part of it is a sad development of popular sport. The leagues can probably only take countermeasures themselves: Do they want to remain an attractive game for the masses â or create as much money as possible? The DFL must also ask itself this question when it comes to the upcoming allocation of rights for Bundesliga broadcasts. The Dazn price increase and the expected wave of terminations is just another warning shot.
