All roads point to the Senate of the Republic, today the opinion for the appointment of former Governor Quirino Ordaz Coppel as Mexico’s ambassador to Spain could be going up to the plenary for voting. As far as we had information, everything was ready to go in today’s session, we will see if there are no last minute changes. Anything can happen.
Let us remember that last Thursday President López Obrador’s proposal for 18 embassies reached the Board of Directors of the Senate, including: Quirino Ordaz Coppel for Spain; Leopoldo de Gyves de la Cruz in Venezuela; Victor Hugo Morales Meléndez in Trinidad and Tobago; Guillermo Zamora and Villa in Nicaragua; Luis Manuel López Moreno in Saint Lucia; Laura Beatriz Esquivel Valdés in Brazil, and Carlos Miguel Aysa González, ambassador to the Dominican Republic.
There are two important points, first, the national president of the PRI, Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, has already put his cards on the table and will immediately begin the process of expelling the PRI members who are appointed to the position of ambassador or consul. So this same day would be the session at the CEN of the tricolor. In addition, they have already announced that the senators of his party will vote against it.
The second point, in the particular case of former Governor Quirino Ordaz Coppel, will have the vote in favor of the Morena bench and its allies. In fact, both the morenista senator Imelda Castro and the governor Rubén Rocha Moya have made their support public, they will ask for the appointment to be supported.
The interesting thing comes when Quirino Ordaz Coppel is appointed ambassador of Spain, the vote for the expulsion of the PRI will surely be “fast track” and this situation could completely change the political scenario in Sinaloa. Do not rule out a disbandment in the tricolor towards the Verde and Morena party, but in the medium term.
In the short term, the most sensible thing will be for the Quirinistas to remain within the PRI, fight for control and maintain their right as militants, in the end their leader will be far away and there will surely be a very discreet operation.
What is a reality is that from the moment Quirino Ordaz is appointed ambassador of Spain, he will be one of the strongest political figures in the state, with great influence in the federal government and especially with President López Obrador, with whom he has a good friendship, since has been confirmed.
So from this scenario we see the possibility that the former governor, still outside the PRI and in Spain, manages to maintain a strong group within the party because he will be on the national political board and with a very important influence.
It must be recognized that currently there is no active and strong political group within the PRI. Of the active PRI members with positions, Senator Mario Zamora stands out, who has been away from the local public scene; also the federal deputy Paloma Sánchez is very focused on her legislative work and her tasks in the PRI CEN. While the local deputies are obviously from the group of the former governor and surely they will not be left without a political leader.
Other active PRI members are the aldermen who have not yet shown their power and unity, we will see later if they manage to have an important presence to get into the negotiations of the candidacies. The rest of the political groups related to the PRI are muted and disjointed.
Everything indicates that the fight is almost personal between the national president of the PRI, Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, against former governor Quirino Ordaz Coppel, without a doubt, it will be a train wreck. Very attentive because the former governors who have been besieged by the PRI leader could become an opposition bloc against Alito Moreno himself and would definitely undermine him in the states.
