The Congress of Peru approved this Monday to admit to debate the impeachment motion against the Peruvian president, the leftist Pedro Castillofor “permanent moral incapacity” to occupy the position.
In a plenary session convened for this day, a total of 76 legislators voted in favor, 41 voted against and there was one abstention.
However, legislator Jorge Montoya, of the far-right Popular Renovation, proposed that the debate be brought forward to March 18, which generated the rejection of the ruling party of Peru Libre and a suspension of the plenary session to make a final decision on the date. in the Board of Speakers.
Montoya is one of the promoters of the impeachment motion together with congressmen from the Fujismorista Fuerza Popular and the conservatives Avanza País, Somos Perú, Podemos Perú and Alianza para el Progreso.
This is a second impeachment motion filed against Castillo, given that the first one did not reach the necessary votes for its debate. at the end of last year. According to the president of the Congress, María del Carmen Alva, it will be held on March 28.
An eventual dismissal of Castillo, in power since July 28, will require
of the favorable vote of 87 of the members of the Legislative, a circumstance that already occurred in 2020 with the then president, Martín Vizcarra (2018-2020).
The current petition includes 20 points, ranging from the “questionable” appointments of at least 10 ministers of state, the alleged existence of a shadow cabinet and the president’s statements in an interview with the international network CNN regarding his intention to call a referendum to grant Bolivia an outlet to the sea.
The motion also mentions alleged influence peddling in police and military bids and promotions, as well as complaints by a businesswoman who has linked Castillo to an alleged network of corruption.

Minutes before the admission to debate, the Board of Spokespersons of the Congress had approved that the head of state attend this Tuesday to offer a message to the parliamentarians, as requested on his behalf by the president of the Council of Ministers, Aníbal Torres.
The head of the cabinet had anticipated that Castillo wanted to announce new state measures, including “some surprise”, as a result of “political insecurity” that “is causing a lot of damage.”
