The adoption of Angela Merkel as part of the tattoo made waves as far as El Salvador. There the head of state makes comparisons with a dictatorship – including a smiley smiley face.
San Salvador – The authoritarian President of El Salvador has suggested that the great tattoo to pass Chancellor Angela Merkel had the characteristics of a dictatorship.
“The uniforms, the flaming torches, the colors, the helmets … 16 years in power,” wrote the Salvadoran head of state Nayib Bukele on Twitter on Thursday, referring to a media report on the tattoo. “But El Salvador is dictatorship,” he added – along with a tearful laughing emoji.
Merkel was adopted by the Bundeswehr after 16 years in office with the big tattoo in the Bendler Block in Berlin on Thursday evening. The ceremony is the highest tribute to the armed forces and especially reserved for federal presidents, chancellors and defense ministers. Most recently there was a major tattoo in front of the Reichstag building to end the Bundeswehr’s mission in Afghanistan.
“Coolest dictator in the world”
Critics and international organizations repeatedly warn against the autocratic style of government of Bukele, who has been the head of state and government of the Central American country for two and a half years. “Bukele has practically opened the hunt for independent journalists, lawyers, human rights defenders and anyone who dared to criticize him or his government’s policies,” Amnesty International said on Wednesday. For a while, Bukele described himself – apparently ironically – on his Twitter profile as “the coolest dictator in the whole wide world”.
The 40-year-old conservative had soldiers deployed in parliament in February 2020 to force approval to finance his security concept. After his party achieved a clear majority in parliament in an election, it swapped all five constitutional judges of the Supreme Court in May. The new judges have now decided to lift a ban on a second consecutive term of office for the president. El Salvador became the first country in the world to introduce Bitcoin as legal tender in September. dpa
