It’s a truly prehistoric beast – a 600-pound fish was pulled from a river in Canada by an angler. And then set free.
Victoria – Yves Bisson will certainly not forget this fishing trip in a hurry. The fishing guide and owner of the Yves Bisson Sturgeon Company pulled a gigantic fish out of the water.
“It’s one of the biggest I’ve ever seen,” writes Bisson on Facebook of his catch. He also posts photos. Bisson estimates the giant fish to be about 600 pounds (about 272 kilograms) and 3.2 meters long. The catch on the Fraser River in British Columbia (Canada) apparently impressed even the most experienced angler.
“It’s one of the biggest I’ve ever seen” – Angler pulls live dinosaur out of the water
The extraordinary catch is a living dinosaur – a white sturgeon. Sturgeon are so named because these freshwater fish have been around since the Jurassic period. Equipped with gills and fins, the sturgeon has been on earth for more than 200 million years. This fish also has a biblical age. Bisson suspects the sturgeon is about 100 years old.
Primeval fish: White sturgeon threatened with extinction
White sturgeons are on Canada’s Endangered Species List. Sturgeon meat is considered a delicacy, and the sturgeon was almost eradicated because of its black caviar. It is therefore obligatory for anglers to release sturgeon again. As part of a conservation program, Bisson tagged his fish before releasing them. In recent years, volunteers and professional fishing guides tagged more than 68,000 sturgeons.
“We were all amazed as this fish had no mark and probably had never been caught before,” Bisson said, like Angler Magazine fieldandstream.com reported. As part of a conservation program, Bisson regularly scans and tags sturgeons to collect data on the fish.
A record-breaking catch recently caused a stir on Lake Constance. An angler pulled a catfish over two meters long out of the water. Then he was attacked. (ml) *Merkur.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
